Place of the Martyrs

Description:

  • During WWI when the Lebanon was part of the Ottoman Empire, the allies mainatined a blockade on the city to drive the Ottomans out. This resulted in a revolt of several distinguised Lebanese nationalists who were later handed by the Ottomans. To commemorate these national heroes, a monument was erecetd in the Place des Martrs. During the Civil war the monument suffered serious damage. Today only bullet riddled pieces of the bronze statue are standing. The Place des Marty is an emblematic location, often the center of protests and demonstrations.
