Belfast City Skin Works

Description:

  • The Belfast City Skin Works houses what must be one of the most unusual Belfast museums; 'The Celtic and World Tattoo Museum'. This rare collection of designs, photos, books and instruments has been put together by David "Skull" Bingham and covers artistic, cosmetic and religious tattooing from all over the world. The history of tattooing as an art is ancient. Used extensively by so-called "primitive" peoples, it was banned by a papal edict in Europe in the 8th century and thereafter flourished among groups of social outcasts. The museum offers a fascinating trip into a kind of underworld, with lots of information on the traditional Celtic form.
