Gosford Castle Forest Park

Description:

  • This large forest park features a huge early 19th-century mock Norman castle (which is unfortunately closed to visitors), an arboretum, walled garden, deer park and bird sanctuary. There are extensive walks and nature and educational trails. It is also possible to book a forest guide. Ancient history is visible here on the Gosford Estate as there are three raths, or ring forts, dating back thousands of years. Another claim to fame of Gosford is its connection with Dean Swift, the 18th-century author of Gulliver's Travels, who spent time here. Gosford Castle was used by the American armed forces during World War II and there was a prisoner of war camp in the grounds. There are toilets, a teahouse and picnic benches near the main car park.
