The Red Hot Chili Peppers mention Big Sur in their song "Road Trippin." The song tells of lead singer Anthony Kiedis, guitarist John Frusciante, and bassist Flea surfing in Big Sur after Frusciante rejoined the band.

Orson Welles and his wife at the time, Rita Hayworth, bought a cabin in Big Sur on impulse in 1944. The two never spent a single night there. Now, the property has been converted into a popular, award-winning restaurant, Nepenthe.
