The etymology of Nepenthe is particularly meaningful and is deeply rooted in the place – in Greek, ne = not and penthos = grief or sorrow – literally, "the one that chases away sorrow." This magical oasis lives up to its name. Poised on granite cliffs high above the Pacific, the view from this restaurant is spellbinding. Sip wine and indulge in gourmet food next to fellow travelers, poets, artists, celebrities, and vagabonds. The crowded veranda soars over the treetops and ocean – if you catch sunset, you'll never forget it. If you arrive early (pre-opening), you can still walk out on the lower deck (Café Kevah) and watch the sun rise over the Santa Lucia mountains. Take the time and allow yourself to be stilled. The casual atmosphere belies the inflated prices, but if you're not on a tight budget, it's worth every penny.
