Description:

  • At a time when educating the black population was frown upon, Miles College, established by in 1905 by the Colored Methodist Episocal Church, swung open its doors to give African-Americans a quality education. The historic black school offered African-Americans a college education, the only one to do so in the first half of the 20th Century. Times have changed, but Miles College has not. Since its membership into the United Negro College Fund in 1972, the four-year liberal arts institution has seen a steady enrollment. The college is located on the outskirts of Birmingham in Fairfield, but worth the short drive.
