Description:
Marked by its red mansard roof and wraparound porch, the island's oldest hotel (1852) has hosted Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain, and the Kennedy clan. The young staff is congenial, if occasionally a bit scattered. Bedrooms in the two buildings come in three styles, with queen-size beds and pullout sofas; most are large. A significant attraction is the all-you-can-eat barbecue lunch on the veranda. More formal meals are served in the all-white dining room. Swimming is allowed in the freshwater pond on the property. The hotel sponsors concerts of classical and pop music on its grounds in July and August.
