Description:

  • Emus, llamas, black swans, two camels, and a Scottish Highland ox graze in the meadow behind the Hotel Manisses, the most visible property of a island-wide hospitality empire. The Victorian hotel tends toward older couples. Guest rooms utilize oak antiques and lots of wicker; some have fireplaces. The Manisses parlor serves desserts and flaming coffees in the evening, and stylish dining is featured in the main dining room, with comparable fare in the more casual Gatsby Room. Picnic lunches are also prepared for guests.

The 1661 Inn, up the hill, is where substantial champagne breakfast buffets and afternoon wine and cheese are served to guests of all nine of the properties. (Children are welcome in seven of the buildings; smoking is allowed in one.) The 1661 Inn is now open year-round, although the restaurants are closed in winter.
