Tonight the first Christmas lights of the season were inaugurated on the Amalfi Coast in the town of Minori just east of Amalfi. At 9pm the festivities for “Le Notti della Tradizione” began with the lighting of the holiday decorations throughout town, including the large albero di Natale (Christmas tree) in the town’s Piazza Umberto I along the waterfront. Minori kicks off the holiday season early as part of the celebrations for Santa Trofimena, the town’s patron saint and protector. The relics of this saint are said to have washed ashore in Minori on the night between the 26th and 27th of November, and the winter celebrations for Santa Trofimena are generally considered the beginning of the holiday season.
This year for “Le Notti della Tradizione” the town will be celebrating through the weekend with stands and booths celebrating the gastrononmic specialties of the region, including the the Cilento, Irpinia, Benevento and Vallo di Diano areas of Campania. This year there will also be booths highlighting the artisan tradition of the presepe (nativity). It will be a great event for starting the holiday season, and perhaps even adding some new figures to your Christmas presepe!
Here are photos of the Christmas lights in Minori last year, including their tall lighted Christmas tree. The main street through town was drapped with a curtain of little white lights that was a festive setting for holiday shopping.
Let the holiday season begin!
