Christmas Lights in Minori

Events — By Laura Thayer on November 26, 2010 at 9:01 pm

Tonight the first Christmas lights of the season were inaugurated on the Amalfi Coast in the town of Minori just east of Amalfi. At 9pm the festivities for “Le Notti della Tradizione” began with the lighting of the holiday decorations throughout town, including the large albero di Natale (Christmas tree) in the town’s Piazza Umberto I along the waterfront. Minori kicks off the holiday season early as part of the celebrations for Santa Trofimena, the town’s patron saint and protector. The relics of this saint are said to have washed ashore in Minori on the night between the 26th and 27th of November, and the winter celebrations for Santa Trofimena are generally considered the beginning of the holiday season.

This year for “Le Notti della Tradizione” the town will be celebrating through the weekend with stands and booths celebrating the gastrononmic specialties of the region, including the the Cilento, Irpinia, Benevento and Vallo di Diano areas of Campania. This year there will also be booths highlighting the artisan tradition of the presepe (nativity). It will be a great event for starting the holiday season, and perhaps even adding some new figures to your Christmas presepe!

Here are photos of the Christmas lights in Minori last year, including their tall lighted Christmas tree. The main street through town was drapped with a curtain of little white lights that was a festive setting for holiday shopping.

It made me happy to see Minori looking so pretty, even if it was last year. did it stay dry for this year’s celebrations?

Ciao Linda! Minori is such a pretty town. Sounds like you’ve spent time there! Yes, there was a break in the rain Friday evening around the time of the official lighting. Hopefully, it wasn’t raining in Minori! But it’s been a very rainy weekend. I hope they had a good turnout for the events! I was home preparing for Thanksgiving, which we celebrated yesterday. I’ll get to Minori one of these evenings and take some better photos of the lights this year and share them here. Thanks so much for stopping by here! 🙂
