A Winter Day in Sorrento

Things to Do — By Laura Thayer on January 18, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Last week I wrote about Visiting the Amalfi Coast in the Winter, and how the cool, clear air makes for fine views. I had a reminder of that when I spent a lovely afternoon recently with friends in Sorrento. This photo was taken from the beautiful terrace of the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento overlooking the Bay of Naples with Mt. Vesuvius in the distance. The evening light was gorgeous! Now do you believe me that the views are fabulous in the winter?

Sorrento is an excellent day trip from the Amalfi Coast or Naples. During the winter you can arrive there by public transportation on the Circumvesuviana train from Naples or on the SITA bus from the Amalfi Coast. But remember, this is also a great time of year if you’d like to tackle the adventure (an exciting one for brave drivers!) of driving on the famous Amalfi Coast Road and along the Sorrento coastline. There is less traffic this year, and, most importantly, fewer tourist buses. Stop and enjoy the views along the way … and don’t forget to pack your camera!
