Going Out in Amsterdam – Thursday Night!

Going out in Amsterdam on a Thursday night is easier than in most cities. Everyone is getting ready for the weekend and clubs are starting to host some of their regular programs and more well known parties.

The Melkweg (or Milky Way) is one of Amsterdam’s most famous clubs, named for the fact that it’s housed in a former milk factory. Not only a music venue, the Melkweg also houses theatrical and dance production, film, photography and media art.

One of the more well know dance nights in Amsterdam is called Rauw (pronounced “raw”), and makes it’s monthly appearance at the Melkweg, usually on a Thursday. If you’re into Minimal Tech, House, or Electronic music in general, this is the place to be – big name DJs frequently make an appearance at Rauw.

But most importantly, make sure you check the Melkweg schedule on any day of the week. It is the venue of choice for many artists coming through Amsterdam, and they always have a full roster of performers, festivals and events.

Thursdaynight is studentnight in the Netherlands,so a lot of places all over the country offer beer for a lower price. It’s also nice that you avoid the 16-year old kids on thursday.

Indeed many student groups organize their weekly borrels (drink nights) on Thursday night, where you can can get cheap beer – but the places are usually packed. Wednesday’s party called “Noodlanding” at the Paradiso is not an official student night, but has been adopted by students and is dominated by them. It is by far one of the most popular (and lively) weekly parties in Amsterdam.
