Oliebollen Have Arrived! The Best Snack in Amsterdam

What's New — By Anna Bandurska on November 22, 2010 at 11:25 pm

Oliebollen, or “oil balls” are a traditional Dutch New Years treat; however, these days they start to appear late November and stick around until New Years.

They’re deep fried donut balls, sold from little booths around the city of Amsterdam. The best oliebollen are the ones that just come out of the oil and are still warm – make sure you get them with powdered sugar.  Krenten oliebollen are oliebollen with raisins (krenten=raisin) and are equally delicious.  Most stands also sell waffles and a variety of cream filled pastries.

If you want to try one of these Dutch treats, the best place to find an oliebolen stand are in and around Dam Square , Museumplein, as well as the Christmas fair at Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein.
