Secret Santa – Dutch Style

Secret Santa is a popular Christmas activity where I’m from (Canada), and is probably popular in other countries too.  It’s simple: we draw names from a hat and then have to buy a present for that person, and sometimes taunt our giftee with secret clues as to our identity.

The Dutch do their version of Secret Santa on the night of Sinterklaas, although their event is a lot more crafty. Traditionally, the gift should be wrapped in some sort of home made packaging (some go as far as making elaborate paper-marche), and both should somehow relate to the receiver.  Accompanying this surprise is also a poem, dropping hints to what the gift might be, and usually pointing out any character flaws the receiver may posses.
