The Atlantic City Airshow Soars into Town

What's New — By melodymoser on August 23, 2010 at 10:24 pm

Work on your tan, take a dip in the ocean, and watch amazing aerial stunts overhead, all for free. On Wednesday, August 25th, from 10 am to 3 pm, enjoy  aerial acrobatics and heart-thudding performances up above at the Atlantic City Airshow.  In its eighth consecutive year, the free show is a highlight of the summer for many visitors and locals.

New to the show this year is the Brazilian Esquadrilha da Fumacia, also known as the Smoke Squadron, putting on one of only two performances in the U.S. this year.  A U.S. Marine Harrier Jet  demonstration and a U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet demonstration are also new this year at the show. Flybys and demonstrations will range from 50 feet above the water to 5,000 feet in the air, all over the Atlantic City beach and Boardwalk.

The Atlantic City Airshow

New Jersey’s first airshow was held in 1910.  To pay homage, the Atlantic City Free Public Library is offering a new exhibit called “Flying Fearless:  Celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of Airshows in New Jersey” at the Atlantic City Historical Museum on Garden Pier and at the Atlantic City International Airport.  If you can’t make it to either of these, be sure to check out the online exhibit.

Several hotels are offering airshow packages — the Chelsea Hotel is offering a package in which hotel guests can attend a Premier Viewing Party at Chelsea Prime, the hotel’s oceanfront restaurant.  Also, the public are invited to the hotel’s Cabana Club pool party which begins at 11 am on Wednesday, August 25th, and can then watch the airshow afterwards, poolside.

Some of the highlights of this year’s show will be:

•    Brazilian Smoke Squadron
•    U.S. Coast Guard Search & Rescue Demonstration
•    U.S. Navy E-2C Hawkeye Demonstration
•    SAF A-10A Thunderbolt II Demo Team
•    USAF F-16 Viper Demonstration Team
•    U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds
