There has been some concern by those in the tourism industry that people will stop coming to New Zealand in the wake of the recent tragic events in Christchurch. Even Phil Koeghan, a Kiwi and host of the popular Amazing Race series, has been saying that he will try to get the producers to do another season here to help with the situation. That’s all well and good, but let me assure you that New Zealand is still open for business.
Although the city of Christchurch does not need tourists trying to ‘have a look’ in the CBD and putting extra strain on the Police and Search and Rescue workers there at present, areas that have been unaffected by the recent earthquake would love to welcome you. Why? Because Kiwis need some cheery faces from abroad and we also need your tourism dollars. There, I’ve said it. It’s not really ‘just’ about the money, but the repairs to the Christchurch central business district and the surrounding area are going to cost a lot of dosh. If you can spend your hard-earned tourist dollars here and have a great time, it’s a win-win. So don’t cancel those plans that you’ve already made to come down, and if you haven’t made plans yet…do. Come on down and take in the scenery, soak in a hot pool climb the volcanos, go for a surf, jetboat yourself silly and get some fantastic Kiwi kai* in ya. We can’t wait to see you.
*kai is the Maori word for food
