2010 FIFA World Cup fever is upon us here in Bangkok. June 11 begins the run up to the championship game in South Africa on July 11. In my careful analytical predictions, I have Brazil and Germany in the final match. (Complete random guesswork, I confess. By remaining completely clueless the FIFA gods are allowed to work through me without resistance.) On the opening day, I’ll be watching Mexico take on World Cup host South Africa at 9 p.m. Bangkok time down at La Monita Taqueria (as is appropriate).
But where else to watch games here in Bangkok? Oh sure, a handful of hotels offer some special World Cup promotions. Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel for example has the games on in their Sundowner’s Bar on a big screen, snacks, raffle tickets for every 300 baht you spend. But hotel bars close at midnight, generally speaking, and for the late games or any broadcast delays you are out of luck.
Fortunately there is no shortage of sports pubs in Bangkok and here are a few good choices showing active promotion for the upcoming matches. These will likely be staying open for the 1:30 a.m. matches for the hopelessly devoted. (England vs. USA is June 13 here at 1:30 a.m.)
The Sport Corner in Sukhumvit 20 has both indoor (a/c) and outdoor seating and several large screen TVs. Expect drink specials and reasonable prices.
The Londoner Enjoy the match with one of their housebrewed beers.
Roadhouse Barbeque Smokehouse and Grill Some Buffalo wings or ribs, 11 draught beers, and they can replay the match you missed. Just call ahead.
Gulliver’s Traveler’s A little World Cup love for Khao San Road.
Old German Beerhouse See if the Germans make it to the final and this place will be hopping.
Here’s a random alternative. For the before-midnight matches, check out the 2nd beer garden in back at On Nut Market. No guarantees on that one but the food and beer are super.
