Bangkok is already a fantastic hub for cheap travel around Southeast Asia. Low-fare airlines such as AirAsia, Nok Air, and the sketchy One-Two-Go/Orient Thai turn out some amazing fares, especially for anyone with flexibility and who plans ahead.
But the more the merrier, right? Thai Airways recently announced a partnership with Singapore’s Tiger Airways to form Thai Tiger. The budget airline will operate just as the original Tiger does and commence operations in 2011. Routes have not been announced but we can likely expect similar destinations to the Singapore hub, ie. cities within a 5-hour trip radius. Tiger flies from Singapore to 11 countries right now including India and Australia, routes similar to AirAsia, in fact. Even if Bangkok doesn’t get a lot of new destinations out of this, at least a bit of competition for the other airlines should bring more sweet deals.
