New Year’s Eve in Bangkok 2010

It’s time to put the bang in Bangkok. Another New Year is upon us and it’s time to ring it in. Forget New York/Times Square with all the snow and cold; Bangkok hits a steamy high of about 90 F/ 32 C during the sunny days, but gets pleasant (cold by Thai standards) at night with a temp of around 71 F/ 22 C. It’s really the perfect time of the year to be here anyway, and New Years Eve just gives you an extra reason to get out and have some fun.

If you’re interested in the countdown, then head to Ratchaprasong, the intersection where you will find Central World and its adjoining plaza. Expect live music and fireworks and a massive crowd of revelers posing with the lights and decorations.

The usual suspects — the popular Bangkok nightclubs — will be doing their thing as well. Champagne and party favors. But call ahead for reservations.

Want a nice perch for the fireworks? Get a city view from one of the Bangkok rooftop bars. Again, make reservations (and pack your credit card).

If you want to start 2011 with some live music, then check out this list of some of the very best live music venues in Bangkok.

But if you think the traditional Western New Year’s is fun, wait until you try New Year’s Thai style. Come back in April for a bit of the wet and wild Songkran Festival.
