I wouldn’t say that Barcelona’s necessarily known for its sushi. Seafood, yes, but when it comes to Sushi, many of the places are often very overpriced, or still trying to find a balance between ‘greasy spoon sushi’ and utterly inedible. There’s several all you can eat places that mix sushi with Argentinean meat and a wide range of other food groups (don’t ask), but again I’d only recommend them for either the very brave or very hungover. Then there’s plenty of upscale, very classy sushi restaurants, but you won’t spend less than 35 euros a head for a very minimal amount of food.
I have, however, recently stumbled upon a wonderful new sushi find. In the heart of the old city, a few blocks away from Plaza Catalunya and right near Portal de L’Angel, El Machiroku Sushi seems to have mastered the art. Great service, chilled atmosphere (clean yet very relaxed and casual) and most importantly, delicious food at reasonable prices. I’m a hard core sashimi fan, therefore I normally compare sushi restaurants based on sashimi amount (in pieces), per price ratio and El Machiroku not only has the best salmon sashimi in the city but they give you an entire plate, for a very low price. One of my favourite new finds of this year, if you’re into sushi and living in Barcelona or just passing through, this is a definite ‘must see’.
They don’t take lunch reservations but I’d highly recommend making one for dinner as there’s almost always a line up. They also don’t accept card, so bring cash!
