Boston Common has been the heart of this city for about 400 years. It is the oldest park in the country. Fittingly, it is the starting point for the Freedom Trail, which follows the city’s patriots and traces the beginning of the American Revolution. British troops camped here prior to the Revolution and left from these grounds to face colonial resistance at Lexington and Concord during April 1775. Public hangings took place here until 1817.
Today, the Common’s almost 50 acres serves as the anchor for the Emerald Necklace, a system of connected parks that winds through many of Boston’s neighborhoods. It also is a good location to set up hotel headquarters since it provides easy access to other parts of the city.
