Feast Thursday or Torkos Csütörtök is the closing day of the Farsang celebrations, the day before the Great Fast. Traditionally Hungarian folk would eat up the leftovers from Farsang so as nothing would go to waste – kind of like Pancake Day in England.
It was last year that the Hungarian Tourism Zrt. decided to reanimate this tradition, and that is how Feast Thursday as we know it today has come into existence: All restaurants taking part offer 50% off; that is 700 across the country, 214 in Budapest alone. Why it’s better than Valentine’s Day? You don’t just get a cheap meal out of the deal, but are helping a Hungarian tradition live on!
This year it’s taking place on the 10th of March – that is in 10 days time – so let the countdown begin…!
