Four years after the closing and 2 long years after the expected reopening of the grandiose opera house smack in the center of Buenos Aires, the Teatro Colón finally pulls back the curtains once again to some of the finest performers and works in the world. The reopening of what is normally one of the main attractions in Argentina’s capital city coincided with the country’s bicentenary celebration, which takes place today, May 25.

Over 1,000 artisans and art restorers were called in to repair and revamp the gorgeous interior and exterior of the theater, which seats 2,700. The opening performance included scenes from Puccini’s La Bohème and Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake. Several thousand spectators crowded Avenida 9 de Julio last night during the performances, as the Colón projected the goings-on inside the opera house onto the façade for all to glimpse a peek. Works will finally resume normal scheduling; performances intended for the Colon stage during this time of extensive renovations have been delegated to other theaters around Buenos Aires.
