Buenos Aires’ Newest Don’t-Miss Art Spaces

Coming off the heels of June’s ArteBA international art fair, Buenos Aires is aflutter with art exhibitions trumping the work of the best and brightest that this exceptionally creative town has to offer. Be sure to check out these new spaces for a dose of contemporary expression:

Mar Dulce

Palermo’s lovely Mar Dulce is brand-new and super cozy. Look for work in small and medium format by a slew of contemporary and classic artists from the River Plate; the library of artists’ books can keep you entertained for a full afternoon.

Nora Fisch Arte Contemporáneo had a strong showing at ArteBA, the gallery’s first big art fair after opening in May. The Barrio Norte gallery’s selection of artists deal with socio-political issues in an appropriately conceptual manner.

Oz

Superheroes and childlike caricatures are favorite themes at Galería Oz, one of the newest spots occupying a locale in Barrio Norte’s Patio del Liceo. Pop by the open-air galleria for a full-on one-stop creative experience; down the hall are contemporary galleries Ups! and Mite and just across the way is the fantastic Purr Libros independent book shop.

Planeta Cubico presents contemporary work by emerging artists in small- and medium-format (and very accessibly priced) photography, painting, and design. The best time to check out the latest show is during one of the DJ- and booze-fueled openings in the tiny Palermo space; keep an eye on the gallery on Facebook for the next date.

Decidedly off the art circuit is Wallrod, a year-old gallery located in a gorgeous classic house in the southern neighborhood of Boedo. Make the trek on Friday nights for encounters of the artsy kind, when BA’s art stars flood in for a drink and a dance amidst the shows, which rotate on an almost monthly basis.
