Cabo’s Late Night Dining Scene

Food, Things to Do, Travel Tips, What's New — By Chris Sands on September 7, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Cabo’s rowdy late night party atmosphere is legendary, so perhaps it isn’t surprising that there is also a thriving late night dining scene in San Lucas. Even the most die-hard revelers need to stop and refuel occasionally. Taco shops are extremely popular, of course, but there plenty of other after midnight options.

For pizza lovers, Vero Pizza Cafe is home to the best pies and calzones in Los Cabos. Comfortably esconced in the middle of the nightclub district near Squid Roe, Baja Junkie, Mandala, and many others, Vero is a popular stop for slices, salads, espresso drinks, and convivial company.

Tacos Guss, formerly Tacos Perla, isn’t a popular stop for tourists, but the locals love this place for the large, fresh tortillas, and the late hours (5 p.m. to 5 a.m.). If you have never tried a huarache (fried masa in the shape of a foot or sandal, with your choice of toppings), this is a great place to experience one of Mexico’s culinary treasures. Delicious drinks like horchata (made with rice, vanilla, cinammon, and sugar) and agua de jamaica (hibiscus tea) are also available.

Taqueria El Gran Pastor is hugely popular with tourists, primarily the late night bar crowds that spill out from Rips, Cabo Lounge, Cabo Wabo, Tanga Tanga, and Jungle Bar. This places specializes in tacos al pastor, made with meat from a giant spit of marinated pork. These tacos should also include cilantro, onions, and pineapple (traditionally cooked on top of the pork so that an enzyme found in the fruit will make the meat particularly tender), but the pineapple is a rarity in Cabo. El Gran Pastor, therefore, is a happy exception.

The best thing about Taco Fiesta is that it never closes. Like Taqueria El Venado behind Squid Roe, this is the place where you are likely to see the local bartenders and waiters after they get off work. The fish tacos are well regarded, as are the omelets. The best place in Cabo at 6 a.m.

Subway is one of the few fast food chains that is actually better in Mexico. Maybe it is the fresh local ingredients, and maybe it is the fact that everything tastes delicious at dawn. This store is open 24 hours, and is conveniently located just off the Marina at Plaza Nautica.
