Cabo’s Top Five Italian Restaurants

It’s no secret that a big-game fishing destination like Cabo San Lucas is home to a large number of superb seafood restaurants. And it should come as no shock that Mexico’s top tourist destination showcases an array of the country’s finest regional cuisine. What is a surprise is how many great Italian restaurants and gourmet pizza parlors there are in Cabo. The following are la crema del raccolto.

Sunset da Mona Lisa – Homemade pasta, fresh foccacia bread, and some of the most magnificent Land’s End views in Los Cabos highlight this local fine-dining fixture. The romance and grandeur of the surroundings have made this a popular spot for proposals and wedding ceremonies. Those who aren’t in the mood for Linguine di Mare or Cannoli di Granchio Cavolfiori e Tartufo can content themselves with gourmet pies in the Pizza Lounge, or expertly chosen glasses of wine from sommelier Sabrina Sanchez.

Alcaravea Gourmet – This downtown hot spot features excellent Italian cuisine from Chef Enrique Gerrard, a romantic vine and flower covered entrance, and a European-flavored bohemian chic atmosphere. Highlights include an appetizer of mushrooms sauteed in white wine and dusted with parmesan cheese, and excellent veal scallopini and pasta carbonara. The staff here is warm, friendly, and expertly trained, and there are some very good South American wines available by the bottle or glass.

Salvatore’s – A favorite of locals and long-time visitors due to the lovely courtyard setting, excellent food, and enormous portions. The lasagna here is legendary, and could very well feed a small village. The large portions make for more intimate dining, with couples often sharing one entree, such as the delicious Shrimp and Sausage Diablo, Ravioli Quatro Formaggio, or Seafood Puttanesca.

Romeo y Julieta – Located at the foot of Pedregal, Romeo y Julieta has been serving fine Italian food since the early days of tourism in Cabo San Lucas. They are famed locally for their incredible Caesar Salad, which is assembled French-style at your table, and for their delicious handmade pizzas from a mesquite wood oven. The decor is a mixture of traditional checkered cloth linens and upscale touches like a colonial-style courtyard where you can enjoy a romantic dinner under the stars.

Galeon Ristorante Italiano – Like Romeo y Julieta, El Galeon is one of the Solmar Group of restaurants, founded by the late great Cabo developer Don Luis Bulnes. Argentinean piano player Ronal Valentino has been performing at El Galeon for over 25 years, and his virtuosity, as well as traditional Italian atmosphere and Chef Raffaelle Di’Maio’s old-world cuisine have made this restaurant a local landmark.
