Events, Things to Do — By Pharaonick on June 27, 2010 at 11:28 am

Here’s my pick of the best craic going down in Cairo this week. For fuller listings, check out iCroc.com (also available on your mobile) and Cairo360.com.

First up, the 11th Egyptian International Modern Dance Festival is still taking place (runs till July 5th). This features a mixture of local and foreign dance acts performing at venues around Cairo, mainly the Cairo Opera House. See iCroc.com for daily listings.

There are a number of music concerts going on throughout the week, such as:

  • Wust El Balad (Egyptian Rock) and Bashir (Upper Egyptian Folk) at After Eight
  • Cocoon (Latin and Jazz mixes), Masters @ Funk (Funky House) and Screwdriver (Classic Rock covers) at Cairo Jazz Club
  • Ali El-Haggar (traditional Egyptian singer) at al-Sawy Culture Wheel
  • Nass Makan (fusion of traditional music styles from Egypt and Sudan) and Mazaher Ensemble (traditional healing music known as Zar) at Makan

Solar Day 2010

On Saturday June 19th, 22 cities around the USA celebrated Solar Day 2010, an event which aimed to promote the benefits of solar power and energy independence, and encourage individuals and business to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.

Egypt is hosting its own event on Saturday July 3rd at the Swiss Club. Running from 5.30 pm till 10 pm there will be two documentary screenings on solar energy, poetry, performance art, and two contemporary Egyptian bands.

Entrance fee is 20 LE. For more information, see the ecooptionsegypt website, and the Facebook group.

Enjoy!
