Festivals
Until 10th August The 20th Citadel Festival for Music and Singing is taking place at the Citadel. The festival has four outdoor stages, and the bands performing range from classical to contemporary takes on Arabic music. Entrance is free, and performances are supposed to start at 8 pm (get there earlier though to be on the safe side).
Also, the Arab Music Festival is running at the Sayed Darwish Theatre at the Cairo Opera House from 2nd to 8th August. Performances begin at 8 pm.
Monday 2nd
Egyptian Pop band Wust El Balad playing at After Eight.
Tuesday 3rd
Head to al-Sawy Culture Centre for one of the following: I am Hip-Hop, some stand-up comedy, or The Mado Acoustic Project (Mohamed Abdel Aal performing songs written by him and other Arabic poets, including covers of some old classics). There’s a small entrance fee to each gig.
Wednesday 4th
Welad El Faraana Band playing at al-Sawy Culture Centre: concert of ancient Egyptian music by band researching Egypt’s musical heritage based on the instruments kept in museums around the world.
Thursday 5th
Mohsen Farouq and the Cairo Opera House Arabic Music Soloists performing a selection of songs by classic Arabic heavy-weights such as Umm Kalthoum and Abdel Halim Hafez, at the Cairo Opera House at 8 pm.
Friday 6th
Egyptian pianist and composer Omar Khairat performing at the Cairo Opera House at 8 pm.
Saturday 7th
Alternative music by Cairo Rock band Black Theama at al-Sawy Culture Centre, to celebrate their first album launch.
