Current travel advice for Egypt.

Given the uprising in Egypt, it’s not surprising that governments are issuing warnings to their citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the country.

Here is the current advice from the US State Department, from the UK Foreign Office, and from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Many governments are also arranging flights to evacuate their citizens from the country.

At present, the situation is volatile and subject to sudden change. It seems unlikely travel to Egypt will be recommended for at least the next few weeks, and most likely longer.

The Cairo Tower casts its long shadow over the ground.

Today’s photo is a picture of the shadow cast by the Cairo Tower onto the ground below. This 187 meter high granite tower offers spectacular views over Cairo, as long as the weather is clear. If you’re lucky, you can see all the way from the pyramids in the west to the Muqattam hills in the east, and there are numerous telescopes if you want to zoom in on anything that catches your eye. There is a revolving restaurant, and a cafe that serves good ice-cream. At night, the tower is lit up with lights that change color and pattern. Some locals will tell you the light display depends on the mood of the tower’s owner!

Auctioning a camel at the Cairo Camel Market.

This photo was taken at the Birqash Camel Market, just outside of Cairo. Friday is the main market day, when thousands of camels are sold by auction to farmers, butchers, and people involved in the tourist industry.

The camel pictured is to be sold for meat rather than riding or work – you can tell because its feet aren’t hobbled – and interested buyers will poke and prod the animal with their sticks to determine how much good quality meat there is on the camel. The actual bidding takes place very quickly – usually lasting less than 30 seconds per animal – and once sold the camel is marked with the buyer’s sign, and will be collected – and paid for – later.

Egyptian Culture Minister announces the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization will open in September 2011.

According to this report by Al Masry Al Youm, Farouk Hosni – Egyptian Minister of Culture – recently announced that the new Egyptian Museum of Civilization will be opened in September 2011.

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is situated in Fustat, not far from the Religion Compound and the Mosque of Amr Ibn al-Aas, overlooking the lake Ain al-Sira. The museum will showcase artefacts that represent the richness of Egyptian civilization through the ages, from prehistoric times through to the present day.

The exhibits are expected to be arranged thematically, and to include sections on the Nile, writing, and material culture.

The website Heritage Key also claims that “The climax of the visitor’s experience will be the Royal Mummies gallery, which aims to recreate the experience of visiting a royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings.” This fits with rumours that exhibits from the current Egyptian Museum will be distributed amongst various museums in Egypt if and when the new Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids is finally opened.
