This week is a busy week in Cancun and Isla Mujeres.  With two concerts planned, it’s certainly a great weekend for Cancun’s local music scene.  Both shows will feature local artists but, unfortunately, both concerts will be held at the same time.

On Saturday, August 14th, there will be a big beach party on Playa Gaviotas (the public beach behind Plaza Forum by the Sea), called Energia Fest.  In addition to contests and cultural events, there will be a concert on the beach.  Vertigo 777, an incredibly popular local band, will headline the event and Kopernico will be the opening act. The show starts at 4pm and admission is free.  A beach party AND live rock ‘n roll.  Life doesn’t get much better than that.

The other rock concert, Cancun Fest Rock y Independencia, will take place in El Parque de Las Palapas, a large park in the center of downtown Cancun.  The show goes from 5pm-10pm and local bands will be performing, however the promoters never bothered to announce which bands will actually be playing (advertisers in Cancun often neglect to include the most important information in their ads).  Just remember, a rock concert where the line-up remains a mystery is better than no rock ‘n roll.  While you are in El Parque de Las Palapas be sure to stroll across the park and have a fantastic meal at La Habichuela, one of Cancun’s best restaurants.

The Persiod Meteor Shower is happening this week.  Peak viewing in Cancun & Riviera Maya will be August 12th & 13th.  People in areas away from the cities will have a better chance of seeing meteors than those staying in Cancun’s hotel zone or in Playa del Carmen.  Go out to Isla Blanca, if you are staying in Cancun, or go to any of the beaches in Akumal, Tulum, or Puerto Morelos, and you should be able to enjoy nature’s spectacular show.   For best results, grab a blanket and a bottle of wine, then lay on the beach and gaze up at the night sky.

August 17th will be Isla Mujeres Founding Day.  To celebrate the birth of Isla Mujeres, there will be parades, music, and other festivities.

Finally, from Cancun & Isla Mujeres all the way down to Tulum, baby sea turtles will hatch and be released into the ocean throughout August (and continuing on through October).  Some hotels have turtle nests that they will guard until the babies hatch.  Ask about this at your hotel, if you want to witness the tiny turtles making their way into the Caribbean Sea.

Don’t miss the fun!
