Whale Sharks Are Back in Cancun
Things to Do, What's New — By Susan Vincil on May 25, 2011 at 6:50 pmWhale shark season officially began on May 15th and the magnificent, docile creatures are already out in full force. These photos were taken on May 23, 2011, just off of Isla Contoy, a small island located approximately 18.5 miles from Cancun.
Each Summer, whale sharks migrate to the warm waters near Cancun. They can found off of the islands of Isla Holbox and Isla Mujeres, both of which are very close to Cancun. Whale sharks are very large but they do not eat meat and are not a threat to humans.
Tours to swim with whale sharks in their natural habitat, the open sea, are available during the summer months. The 4th Annual Whale Shark Festival will be held on Isla Mujeres July 15-17, 2011.
