Cancun’s Best Beaches

Things to Do, Travel Tips — By Susan Vincil on June 27, 2011 at 9:23 pm

Cancun’s hotel zone has roughly 14 miles of beaches that face either the Caribbean Sea or Mujeres Bay. All of the beaches face beautiful turquoise waters so, regardless of which side of the hotel zone you choose for your vacation, you will not have to compromise a great view.

In early 2010, there was a major beach reconstruction project that rebuilt the vast majority of the beaches that face the Caribbean Sea.  Now those beaches are very wide and lovely. Some of the beaches facing the Caribbean Sea have a ledge in the sand, from erosion, but “stairs” or walkways have been built into the sand so you can get down to the water’s edge, but that is a much better alternative than having small beaches.

After the beach reconstruction project, miles and miles of beaches in Cancun can be considered “the best” but I’ve only listed my personal favorites here. As a long-time resident of Cancun, I’ve seen all of the beaches many times and truly believe these beaches to be the best in town.

  • Dreams Cancun Resort & Spa: This resort has two beaches; one on Mujeres Bay and one on the Caribbean Sea.  There is even a natural beach in the area near the pool and sundeck. The water on both beaches is very calm and great for small children.

  • Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach: The beach at this resort faces Mujeres Bay. There is a pier at one end of this resort, which makes it impossible for anyone to access the beach from the street. The only people that have access to this beach are the guests of Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach and Dreams Cancun Resort & Spa, which is the neighboring hotel.  This is a very large hotel and the beach is quite long. Some areas of the beach are much nicer than others but the privacy factor and the calm waters make this beach great, year after year.

  • Presidente Inter-Continental & Sunscape Villas at Kin-Ha: These two resorts have what is arguably the best beach in Cancun. It is one of the few beaches that has an abundance of palm trees.  The sand on this massive, flawless beach feels like baby powder, which is of the many reasons to love it.

  • Playa Delfines: This is one of the public beaches, in Cancun’s hotel zone.  It is located in the southern part of the hotel zone, facing the Caribbean Sea.  There is a large wooden deck area at the street level, which is a great place for a photo op, or just gazing out at the Caribbean.  This beach is very large, but it tends to gets very crowded on Sundays, when most locals have the day off. Other than that, you can usually visit this beach without having it feel overrun with people.

  • Playa Gaviota Azul: This is another one of Cancun’s public beaches and it is very easy to get to.  This beach is located right behind Plaza Forum by the Sea, the mall where Coco Bongo nightclub, Carlos ‘n Charlie’s, and Hard Rock Cafe are located.  The beach is spectacular from Plaza Forum by the Sea all the way up to the northern point of the hotel zone, known as Punta Cancun, where Dreams Cancun Resort & Spa is located. This beach is very crowded on weekends, especially Sundays.
