Spotlight on Chicago’s Southport Corridor

Things to Do — By adimarcial on May 25, 2011 at 10:48 pm

I happened to have a meeting in the Southport Corridor of Lakeview yesterday afternoon and was pleasantly reminded of how fun this neighborhood is. Even in the torrential downpour that dropped down on Chicago yesterday, I was still able to marvel at all of the shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes. And, boy was I glad there were plenty of cafes for me to haul my water-soaked self in and take shelter! This is a great neighborhood to wander through during the afternoon or grab a drink at in the evening. It is just a short walk from Wrigleyville, but certainly not as crazy as the scene is there, or hop on the Brown line, which will drop you right at the Southport el station. Here are a few highlights:

Safari Cup
This fun coffee shop is located directly underneath the Southport el stop and is a perfect place to grab a cup of coffee, a quick bite to eat, and enjoy a book. The environment is very quiet and laid-back, the staff is super friendly and definitely from the neighborhood, and the decor is kitschy African to go with the safari theme. A little silly, but gives for something interesting to look at.

Southport Lanes
Looking for an activity with your night out? Grab a group of friends and reserve a spot for bowling. The bar is a typical sports bar with regular bar food, but the fun is in the second room, which offers pool tables and just four lanes, which are nothing fancy but provide for a great social activity.

This lively restaurant is a perfect summer destination. Serving Latin-inspired food, plenty of sangria, and lively music, which is sometimes live, creating a vibrant atmosphere that will make you feel you are not in Chicago for just a moment. The space is tight, but makes for an intimate meal with a small group of friends. You can also enjoy the patio on warm days.

Music Box Theater
If you are looking for something truly unique, head to the Music Box Theater for an independent or foreign film. It boasts the largest theater space in the city, but the what really stands out about this theater is the whimsical and outlandish decor, which is both fun and romantic. A variety of films are regularly shown, as well as film events.
