The longest running event of its type in New Zealand, Timaru’s Caroline Bay Carnival, turns 100 this year. (Timaru is about 100k south of Christchurch so an easy drive – book your accommodation first)

This much-loved summer-time carnival features all the usual fun of the fair: including the Big Wheel, Roller Coaster, Merry-Go-Round, Octopus and Rocket Ship rides through to buzz boats, sideshow stalls, circus, candy-floss and ice creams.   There is always something for everyone to enjoy at the Caroline Bay Carnival – so visitors should check out how small town New Zealand celebrates our, summer-time, Christmas.

Of course, New Year’s Eve on the Bay, with its midnight fireworks display, will be an excellent evening too.

Given the carnival’s enduring appeal, locals believe there’s every reason in the world to look forward to the next 100 years of seaside sun and fun.
