From next Monday, September 27 until Saturday October 9, Copenhagen’s grand old department store Magasin du Nord will be holding a special event for chocolate lovers – its very own “chocolate symphony” – with proceeds going to children’s charity Unicef. Highlights of the chocolate festival include chocolate tastings, chocolate painting and a chocolate massage.
Magasin, Copenhagen’s oldest department store, has been one of Kongens Nytorv Square’s most well-known landmarks since the 19th-century. The elegant, vast shopping emporium has been producing its own handmade chocolates since 1933, when a small chocolate production line was started next door to the store on Lille Kongensgade. It soon outgrew the small premises, however, and today’s chocolate factory is located in the Copenhagen suburb of Hvidovre.
If you pop into Magasin on Monday, September 27, artist Karsten Auerbach will be showing well-known local personalities how to paint with chocolate: The paintings will then be exhibited in the shop, and sold to the highest bidder through auctioneers Lauritz.com, with all proceeds going to Unicef. And from Thursday, September 30 and throughout the following weekend, the less famous of us will be given the opportunity to enjoy the feel the of white, milk and dark chocolate hitting the canvas.
Chef Annie Féolde, owner of Michelin-starred restaurants in both Italy and Japan, is one of gastronomy’s elite – and one of those chosen to produce the new line of ‘feminine’ Lady Chef chocolate. Between 4 and 6pm on Friday, October 8, she will be appearing in Magasin to talk about her life’s passions, naturally including chocolate, with an accompanying tasting session. Tickets are being auctioned through Lauritz.com.
Local business Mirage spa, meanwhile, is offering the height of self-indulgence: A chocolate massage. During Chocolate Symphony days a “chocolate facial” will be available for the discount price of DKK 249 – DKK 50 cheaper than usual. Indulge yourself with one on the ground floor of Magasin between 10am and 6pm every day during the festival period except Sunday.
