Affectionately referred to as La Abuelita (the grandmother),an immaculate Indian 1909 made by the Hendee Manufacturing Company greets visitors to the Museo de Arte y Diseno Contemporaneo (MADC) this month. At 102 years old, this bike is the most ancient of the 40 motorcycles on display for the exhibit that celebrates and explores 75 years of motorcycle design. After World War 2, Costa Rica became a major importer of motorcycles, especially European models, and the bikes became symbols of popular culture. Antique models of makes like BMW, Harley Davidson, and of course, Vespa are included in the exhibit, along with a collection of vintage motorcycle accessories such as sunglasses and helmets.
