Dublin Celebrates Africa for a Day
Events — By vourneentaylor on May 15, 2010 at 5:05 pmAfrica Day is a fun filled day that celebrates and showcases African culture and creativity in Ireland. In Dublin Africa Day will be held in the Iveagh Gardens on Sunday 16th May from 12 noon until 7pm. Irish Aid who are organising the event have chosen a food related theme this year to highlight issues such as food, security and hunger in Africa.
The day is packed full of educational, cultural and interactive events for all age groups. Explore the Africa Bazaar or visit the education zone where you can interact with NGO’s and learn more about their projects. Arrive hungry as the food zone will offer a feast of flavours where experienced African and Irish chefs will display their favourite African dishes.
To work off all that food, head over to the the Music tent or main stage and dance away to a range of contemporary and traditional African influenced rhythms. Top international acts include Solo Cissokho, a Senegalese musician who plays the kora, Dave Flynn and Niwel Tsumbu and Irish African singer songwriter duo and the award winning Amasis who recently won ‘most promising new act’ at the Irish Meteor Awards.
Before you leave make sure you visit the Arts & Crafts area where there will be a wide variety of goods on offer such as photographs from an exhibition by Colm O’Molloy, Kenyan jewellery displayed by Amani Crafts and Friends of Mali Ireland will be selling traditional Malian arts and crafts items.
So come along and experience Africa for a Day.
