Travel Writing Workshop in Dublin
Events — By vourneentaylor on July 3, 2010 at 9:29 pmFancy yourself as a bit of a globetrotter? Love telling tales of far flung adventure and random encounters? Ever wondered how you might get paid to write about trekking on a lush tropical island or your recent experiences on a pub crawl in Dublin?
Well now is your chance, as veteran travel writers Rory MacClean and Dea Birkett have joined forces for a one day travel writing workshop in Dublin on Saturday 10th July.
I am a past pupil of there workshop and within a few weeks I started working for NileGuide as their Dublin Local Expert. Many others have also had numerous successes with their work being published. Students came from all types of backgrounds and some had travelled quite some distance to have the privilege of learning from Dea and Rory’s experience in an intimate setting.
Dea wore a lime green top and had African style hooped earrings. The vibrant colour represented her personality and her earrings a nod possibly to her doctorate in African Studies. Her energy is stimulating. Within seconds I found myself loosing my inhibition, within minutes I was on my feet engaging with others and within hours pitching to an editor of the Irish Times. In contrast Rory held a monk like disposition with legs crossed, hands wrung together and with a gentle smile he nodded to enthusiastic students. He took over the afternoon slot and his relaxed approach was enigmatic. I soon noticed myself frantically scribbling down his every word trying to absorb every last bit of information and advice.
Canadian Born Rory Maclean has published several books and written for numerous national newspapers and magazines as well as contributing to radio programmes on BBC 3 & 4. Rory originally studied film and uses this as a tool to help us to zoom in on key moments through personal introspection. “what I want is a story that starts with an earthquake and builds up to the climax”
Dea Birkett is a successful British writer and broadcaster. She has had an eclectic career history which includes working in the circus, as a secretary and making funeral wreaths. However, travel and writing are at her core and you can feel her passion for both when she talks about her experiences.
During the day we were also given the opportunity to write and have our work critiqued by both Rory and Dea which I found both nerve wrecking and educational.
If you want to want the confidence to turn your dusty journals and travel anecdotes into published travel articles don’t miss this opportunity.
