Ready to visit Scotland? Heed these packing tips:
Must Have Items for the Winter:
A warm coat , scarves, gloves and a fuzzy hat or earmuffs, as the temperature can get below zero degrees Celsius. Think of it this way, at least you’ll come prepared to throw snowballs in the Meadows.
Leggings – a must for women. Paired with a wool mini skirt and furry boots, you’ll look like you stepped off the fashion runways in London.
Must Brings for Summer:
The usual summer items: shorts, t-shirts, flip flops, sunglasses, etc. But also don’t forget to pack your Wellington boots, umbrella, gloves, scarf, hat and warm coat. Edinburgh is one of the unique cities where you WILL see four seasons in one day.
If you are very particular about sports equipment, and if you can afford it, bring your own golf clubs so you can play on one of the city’s posh golf courses (don’t worry, you can always rent clubs too).
A good pair of hiking/walking shoes because a trek up Arthur’s Seat is a must for every visitor.
Things You Wouldn’t Think To Pack But Should:
As the weather gets so cold in the winter, we recommend you a have “a wee dram” to keep you warm. This may turn into a few more than one thanks to Edinburgh’s fine hospitality, so pack some aspirin for the morning after!
Extra strength hair gel, so your look can withstand the windy Edinburgh terrain.
A hip flask – it’ll keep you going through the Edinburgh Hogmanay street festival, the best New Year’s party in the Western Hemisphere.
Caffeine pills as during the summer festival pubs and clubs are open till 7am – it’s the only way you’ll stay awake.
Totally Unnecessary Items:
A bathing suit: Unless your hotel has a pool, there’s no point. With the country’s chaotic weather, you probably won’t want to risk frolicking in icy cold lochs and beaches.
An “I Love England” t-shirt because everyone knows how much the Scots love the English (hint: this is what we call Scottish sarcasm).[Photo credits: Leggings by lanuiop; Wellington boots by welliefreak; Hogmanay by moron noodle; ABE shirt courtesy of Sumosam]
