Edinburgh City Council runs several public toilets all round the city centre and even outside the city so you should never be caught “Bursting for a pee!” Some are well signposted, others not so. However a friendly local will be happy to point you in the right direction.
The public toilets may not seem the most modern of toilets so if you prefer to sit with a little more comfort or luxury then if you enter into one of Edinburgh’s department stores you will find something more suitable. Department stores in the city centre include Jenners, Frasers, Debenhams and Marks and Spencer.
Edinburgh is also not short of a pub or two so why not pop in for a wee dram whilst using the facilities. Generally if really desperate then you could pop into a local shop, cafe or bar and if you asked to use the toilet then you will rarely be turned away.
Most public toiets are free to use, however there are certain ones where you will be expected to pay – usually no more than 50p. These locations include at train stations and bus stations.
While here you might get some strange looks if you ask for the ‘restroom’. Generally if you ask for the toilet or the loo then you’ll get what you need.
In Edinburgh, certain people like to use different phrases for going to the toilet. I’ll try to keep this clean so among others are phrases such as:
I need a Jimmy Riddle.
I’m going for a single fish.
I need to drop the kids off at the pool.
I’m going for a dump or I’m going for a Donald Trump.
I’m nipping out for a Basil Boli.
I need a Pat Cash.
Here’s a particularly interesting toilet at Edinburgh’s Camera Obscura:
