From Tripe to Kebabs

Fast food in Florence isn’t just referring to McDonalds.  There are specific things that are significant to Florence’s street food. The obvious slice of pizza, is always a great stop for a quick bite to eat.  But have you ever thought about trying tripe?

Tripe is made from only the first three chambers of the cow’s stomach.  As disgusting as that might sound, the taste of tripe is very unique.  The texture is an acquired taste for sure.  Then there is lampredotta which is trippa (tripe) cooked with vegetables and oil.  I know what you are all thinking; How disgusting! Why would I eat that in the city of pizza and pasta?  These are true parts of the Florentine culture and cuisine.  I am asking you to try it.  If you don’t like it, then you know you’ve tried the famous Trippa alla fiorentina.  One of the food stalls of trippa is located behind Piazza della Signoria L’Antico Trippaio.

Another quite popular street food is kebabs.  Although kebabs are not Italian, they are famous among the Fiorentini (Florentines).  It is a hefty burrito-type wrap that fills you up fast.  If you plan on eating this make sure you are heading home.  This is a common kebab restaurant.

What is Florence without a great panino(sandwich).  There are plenty of places that sell boring old panini but you want the best, right?  The one that you can’t miss is off the main strip Via Calzaiuoli, I Fratellini.   Literally a hole in the wall, paying only 2.50 euro for a hearty sized panino, it is worth a stop.

Something cheaper and filling at the same time.  Enjoy!
