World Cup 2010: Lippi and the Azzurri

What's New — By katiegreenaway on May 19, 2010 at 8:00 am

24 days.  It begins once again.  World Cup 2010 is being held in South Africa.  The Azzurri(Italian team) will be present for sure. Marcello Lippi will be the head coach, and going to attempt to bring another World Cup victory back to Italy.  The anticipation is killing me!!!  In 2006, I was living in Chicago so I missed out on the festivities.  This year I will be reporting from the den of the Azzurri.

Lippi has had to make some tough decisions recently.  He has eliminated Francesco Totti from appearing in this World Cup.  He has been absent from the soccer scene on and off.  Luca Toni and Alessandro Del Piero are out of luck too.  No place for them either on Lippi’s squad.  Toni had hoped the idea of making the move back to an Italian squad Roma from Bayern Munich would have saved him a striker position.  Sadly no.  Who was added?  Giuseppe Rossi, Villareal striker, the dual citizen(American-Italian) was taken on board by Lippi.  He was signed a 4-year contract with Manchester United in 2003 which was a huge gain for the Man U team.  Since he was the first pick out of the 1987 age group at the time.  He will do wonders for the Azzurri this time around after playing from England to Italy to Spain.

The team as of right now is:

Italy squad: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Morgan De Sanctis (Napoli), Federico Marchetti (Cagliari), Salvatore Sirigu (Palermo); Gianluca Zambrotta (AC Milan), Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Christian Maggio (Napoli), Leonardo Bonucci (Bari), Fabio Grosso (Juventus), Domenico Criscito (Genoa), Mattia Cassani (Palermo), Salvatore Bocchetti (Genoa); Andrea Pirlo (Milan), Gennaro Gattuso (Milan), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Antonio Candreva (Juventus), Andrea Cossu (Cagliari), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Simone Pepe (Udinese); Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli), Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Marco Borriello (Milan), Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina), Giampaolo Pazzini (Sampdoria).

After June 1st the team will be depleted to 23 players.

FORZA AZZURRI!!!!!!

  • I cannot believe Lippi’s leaving Totti off the squad…I was going to support the Azzuri, but now I’m just not sure.

  • Hey, I agree. Unfortunately giving a red or even yellow for theatrics will be very hard to enforce. There are some flagrant cases obvious to the viewer at home but it is hard for the referee to tell if a tumble is genuine or not without the benefit of instant replay. Imagine the double injury of taking a genuine tumble and then being awarded a red card for your pain. I think this is why most referees are loathe to apply even the currently prescribed yellow card, except they directly witness a violation, something which isn’t always possible with all the activity on the field.
