For the 8th year running, the first week of August will see the Tuscan hill town of Cortona bursting with music, art and talent. Author Frances Mayes, who acts as President of the Festival , will be on hand as well as Sting, Joshua Bell , Nina Kotova and other world class musicians. It will be a family affair with Sting’s wife, Trudie Styler conducting wellness sessions during the week and Edward Mayes debuting with a poetry and art show.
Barrett Wissman, founder of the weeklong musical festival, believes that finding new talents is perhaps the most important part of the Festival since it represents the future.
This year’s Cortona Tuscan Sun Festival (July 30-August 6) will feature several young musicians. Veteran actor Charles Dance will be accompanied by 16-year old violinist Chad Hoopes along with the Orchestra Maggio Musicale Fiorentina playing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
Other child prodigies include young English pianist Oliver Poole and Anthony Arcaini, a 16 year old director and composer.
Viareggio, the Tuscan seaside town famous for its winter carnival, turns the first days of August into a summer carnival. The beach promenade will be enlivened with sports events, shows and the huge carnival floats will be on view along with music and costume parades from August 1-5.
