Ferragosto is busiest day of the year for all Italians. August 15th every year, Assumption Day, is when people flee the cities and head towards the seaside, islands or up into the hills around Florence. Tourists and travelers will find that the city is a lot less crowded with local traffic. Florence is usually run by the tourists in August and the historic center will have all the restaurants and shops open all month long. If you plan on staying outside the historic center, you will notice the neighborhood to be much quieter. Just head into the center and you will find more people to mingle with.

Pangies Bistro is a great place to eat

As I try to head back stateside each year, I have been in Florence during the month of August and noticed how great it was. Although the heat doesn’t help, there are a lot less people traffic where you can enjoy the city as the locals escape to the seaside. Some of the things you can enjoy is going to museums without waiting in a long line. The museums in Florence are easier to enter as the large amount of tourist season is coming to an end. No need to reserve a table at a popular restaurant, you are sure to get in. Enjoy a nice stroll down Via Tornabuoni since now there is no traffic, you can slowly admire the windows of the most expensive designers in the world.

No wait, just walk on into the Uffizi

This year on the Spiaggia sull’Arno right in San Niccolò there will be a sand castle contest on Ferragosto. A way to spend time with family and friends, there will be a BBQ on the beach from 1:00pm and the contest will commence around 3:30pm until 9:00pm in the evening. The theme is open to anything, materials are sand and other materials such as wood or plastic. The dyes have to water-based if used. The contest can contain minimum of 3 to a maximum of 10 elements to create their masterpiece. If you would like to participate in the contest you must register with the information of each team member(first name, last name and date of birth) and email it to comunicazione@piazzart.com. The award ceremony will be held at 9:30pm. 1st prize is a 100 euro gift card to Feltinelli bookshop and 2nd and 3rd prizes will be a gift card from 40 to 60 euros.

Make your own sandcastle and win a gift card to Feltrinelli bookshop

Florence can be a great destination in August. If you don’t mind the heat, less crowded streets and easy access to museums, monuments and churches. All the things that make Florence the destination to see and experience first hand. You won’t run into traffic. You will be able to watch the sunset over Florence with peace while you sip a glass of white wine.
