Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day. In Florence, they consider breakfast to be a coffee or cafe` latte with some biscotti or a brioche. But alas the tradition of brunch has been welcomed into the city mainly for tourists as well as for curious Italians. The best brunch and breakfast restaurants can be found in the historic center and in the Oltrarno.
The Diner is decorated like a diner in that there are booths and there is a nice outside eating area. It is a small place but if you come early you won’t have to wait too long. Their omelettes and pancakes are very good and you can order them anytime during the day. Located right behind the Bargello, this small diner is well-known among the students as well as the locals. On the weekends be sure to arrive before the crowd which is usually around 12 or 1pm.
The Clubhouse is a fairly new locale that is focused on the American Bar scene, located near San Lorenzo. They broadcast American Football games and more importantly they offer traditional brunches every Sunday. There is an option to reserve a table for you and your family. The locale is quite large and it serves a wide range of food as well. From traditional Tuscan cuisine to typical Pub and American food, you can find a great meal here.
Cuculia Liberia is a quaint little place that resembles a bookshop with a cafe inside. There are books all lined up and down the walls. The atmosphere is hip and relaxed with a touch of elegance to it. Their brunch is on Sundays as well where you can choose from traditional breakfast dishes such as omelettes, pancakes, french toast and fresh fruit. Cuculia is located on Via Serragli on the Oltrarno in between Piazza Santo Spirito and Piazza del Carmine.
All are pretty reasonably priced for brunch and for being located in the center of Florence. The fact that there is brunch served in Florence is something that I would never have thought it would happen. Alas it is true, these brunches are not to be missed.
