Popular among younger crowds, The Economy Shoe Shop Cafe and Bar (or “The Shoe” as it’s most often referred to) is a cool and trendy place to hang out with friends every night of the week. Located on Argyle Street (a restaurant and bar hub in downtown Halifax), the Shoe is a favorite among tourists and Haligonians, and you can pretty much count on large crowds on weekend nights. Despite the noise and the number of people who come to enjoy a drink and snack from this bar/cafe, the Shoe’s its food, extensive drink list, and unique and sophisticated atmosphere almost always make for a fun and interesting time. Many consider it a a place to “see and be seen” and people-watch. Due to the Shoe’s popularity, its owners have added on to the Shoe, creating The Diamond and The Backstage areas for diners and drinkers to hang out.
The Shoe’s atmosphere and decor make it unique among other restaurants and bars. It has tropical plants hanging from the walls and light fixtures, dripping candles, and vaulted ceilings. With its multileveled rooms and different nooks and crannies to choose from, the layout of the Shoe gives it a charming sense of privacy. The Shoe features live jazz shows on Mondays and readings from local literati on Tuesday evenings. There are also art shows every months that feature works by local artists.
Many people tend to rave over the Shoe’s menu. The Shoe’s famous Shoe Shop Nachos are a favorite among tourists and regulars alike. Other snacks and starters include fish cakes, hummus, spring rolls, and flambed shrimp. Its menu also features a variety of tapas and sandwiches, as well as high-quality entrees. All of the dishes are delicious and fairly-priced.
Be sure to check out The Shoe’s website for information regarding live music and readings. Other information, including prices, hours, and directions, can be found on the website, as well.
