Local bloggers advise on Istanbul in English
Travel Tips — By Aysegul Surenkok on March 19, 2010 at 8:32 pmTurkish is not one of the globally learned languages like English or Spanish. There are a variety of very good blogs with a lot of valid and high quality feedback on Istanbul -from where to eat the best what and the trendiest things to do or the places to see-, but those are almost always in Turkish.
Below are few other blogs in English that compile valid and insightful information:
1. TOIST -Time Out Istanbul
TOIST is the official blog of the Time Out Magazine. The contents are published both in Turkish and in English. The variety of information covered on TOIST includes not only the top restaurant & bar picks; but features also upcoming events such as concerts, festivals, parties, sports, games etc. Writers are people like you and me, whose entries are most probably edited by the Time Out team.
2. Tara Noble
This blog is kept by an expat living in Istanbul. She comments on anything that occurs to her during her daily go-abouts… Reflections on the fitness of the Turkish people, socio-economic divide within the public, the currency, the supermarkets etc.
Neither a good nor a bad source… It has a general approach to the Turkish life in Istanbul -includes nice small tips on the most general recommendations that you tend to find almost in any guide. A nice way to start getting to know the city.
This bilingual site features both some Turkish and some English articles. The editors organize interesting parties in the trendy Şişhane area as well. Could be interesting to look up for events during your travel dates…
5. Pukka Living
Another highly recommended blog to consult before arranging for your itinerary. Interesting and useful information on living, food, fashion, well-being, arts etc. Kind of like a lifestyle magazine…
