The warmth of summer is coming to an end and winter has not yet descended onto the mountains of Tahoe, but now is the time to get cozy. Fall is a great time to come up to the lake, but sometimes the weather is not perfect for hiking, biking or sitting on the beach. A nice way to relax and look at the view is in a cozy café, complete with good food, coffee, big windows that look out over the lake or the forest and maybe even a roaring fire.

There are several warm and friendly cafés in the Tahoe area, here are the top five:

Truckee Book & Bean

A local favorite for over 15 years, the Book & Bean has the best of both worlds: books and coffee. This place is the epitome of cozy. It is located in a 19th Century stone house right by the Truckee River and the railroad line that runs through Truckee. The coffee is organic and the breakfast and lunch items are yummy.

The Crest Café

Even though it’s close to Alpine Meadows Ski Resort and right next to the Truckee River, this café is a bit isolated and therefore a little more quiet than some cafés within town. Besides coffee and tea drinks, they serve breakfast and lunch. If it is full inside, you can sit out on their beautiful deck right by the river.

Rude Brother’s Bagels

Rude Brothers in South Lake Tahoe, just down the street from the South Lake Tahoe-El Dorado Recreation Area, smells like warmth. There are a plethora of bagels to choose from (try the Mozarella and Pesto or the Jalapeño Cheddar) and several different types of coffee. The place is warm and full of locals. There are large windows looking out onto Hwy. 50 and South Lake Tahoe which is good for people watching.

The Dam Café

This tiny café in Tahoe City is in a great location right by the Truckee River outlet and Common’s Beach. They have a few benches for outdoor seating and a few tables inside to enjoy coffee and sandwiches. Tea drinkers will appreciate the drawer full of a multitude of teas to choose from.

Gear & Grind Café

For the biker set, this café also rents bicycles to ride along the bike path is Tahoe City. They serve custom coffee drinks, tea, sandwiches, baked goods and ice cream. They also offer free wi-fi and a great view off their back deck of the dock and water behind the Boatworks Mall.
