Climbing the Walls at Tahoe

Things to Do, What's New — By christinanellemann on April 12, 2011 at 7:45 am

The latest buzz around the Reno area is the approval of the world’s largest climbing wall right on the downtown strip overlooking the Reno Arch. The wall will be built on the closed Fitzgerald’s casino. The new property, to be called Comm Row will have restaurants, live music venues and up to 347 rooms.

The climbing wall will be 163 feet and will consist of multiple tiers for all levels. The area will also have a 3,000 foot bouldering area. The project is scheduled to open up summer of 2011.

In the meantime, if you find yourself in Lake Tahoe, you can still do some indoor climbing and bouldering while waiting for the snow to melt off the mountains.

Squaw Valley USA has a 30 foot indoor climbing wall and a 45 foot outdoor climbing wall. It is open to all ages and is open on the weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. High Altitude Fitness in Incline Village has a 32 foot climbing wall open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

The city of Truckee has several rock climbing walls, one at the Community Recreation Center which is 29 feet high and one at the Sport Exchange which is 20 feet high. The phone number for the community center is (530) 582-7720 and the number for Sports Exchange is (530) 582-4510.
