The very popular Reno River Festival will be held at the Truckee River Whitewater Park in downtown Reno May 6-8, 2011. This event attracts nearly 40,000 people, and the Truckee Whitewater Park is known around the globe as one of the paddle sports industry’s top whitewater events. Because of the masses of snow still up in the Sierra, the river should be running high for the events.
This year, the paddle sport stars will be Eric Jackson, Ruth Gordon, Nick Troutman, Emily Jackson and Jason Craig. Both pros and amateurs will compete in freestyle, boatercross and stand-up paddle board competitions. This event will also include a free concert in the park from 80’s ska band The English Beat, the first-ever Biggest Little Homebrew Challenge, a 40-foot-long mural from acclaimed painter Mike Meyer, kayak clinics and Yoga in the Park. The Run Amuck fun run (in which competitors get down and dirty during an obstacle filled course through downtown Reno) and a newly added slalom race will also take place on the river. The three-day event doles out $10,000 in cash and prizes to its whitewater athletes, $1,000 to the winner of the Humans in Motion video contest and $300 to the top home-brewer as well as illustrious awards to the winners of both the Run Amuck costume contest and relay race.
