On the West Side of Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe lies one of the best campgrounds in the area: the Emerald Bay Boat-In Campground. As it’s name suggests, it can only be reached by boat, canoe or kayak. From the campground, you have access to the Rubicon Trail that runs along the beach and from there you can hike over to the Vikingsholm Castle or to the Eagle Point Campground on the other side of the bay. With a boat or kayak, you can also visit Fannette Island and the teahouse in the middle of the bay. We like to visit the island in the evening to watch the sunset.

One beautiful summer weekend, several friends and I kayaked from Lester Beach at D.L. Bliss State Park to the campground. We not only were able to spend a few days in the best campground on the lake…we had the best site. This is me inside my tent right on the water.
